LATEST REAL ESTATE NEWS AROUND ACWORTH

According to Acworth’s mayor, 2014 was the year that put the town on the map.  Mayor Tommy Allegood had plenty to brag about at his State of the City address last month, presented to the Acworth Business Association at NorthStar Church.

In the last year, the city excelled at growing its tourism industry, keeping Acworth safe and increasing economic growth, Allegood said.  The mayor also unveiled a new marketing campaign for the city to begin this year that paints Acworth as a relaxing, friendly and safe town.  Allegood said the new slogan to increase tourism for the city is “You’re welcome in Acworth.”

The marketing plan comes from a set of surveys the city sent out to people who visited Acworth, asking them to describe the feel of the city. “People believe and know us to be safe and friendly,” Allegood said. “Even though we’re the fastest growing city in Cobb, we work hard to have that sense of community.”

So the new marketing campaign will invite people into Acworth to “unplug and relax,” Allegood said.  Lifelong downtown Acworth resident and retiree Claude Johnson agreed with Allegood’s characterization of the city.

“Acworth is a place where you can live and enjoy yourself,” Allegood said. “If you don’t live here, move here. I’m serious. It’s good.”  Another reason to come to Acworth, Allegood said, is its low crime rate. The city was rated the second safest city in Georgia last year by Movoto Real Estate, behind Johns Creek.

“We invest in our police force,” Allegood said.  Allegood noted the city recorded no murders from 2012-14.  Allegood also boasted that Acworth was chosen as a location to film part of the movie “Selma.”

“Paramount Pictures chose our old jail (across from the City Hall in downtown Acworth) to film ‘Selma,’ which makes us the film capital of Cobb,” Allegood said.  Holly Bass, Cobb’s tourism director, said filming a movie can make a city experience increased tourism.  “‘Selma’ chose Acworth for their first day of filming. They did the whole breaking the champagne bottle here, which is kind of a tradition, so that was a big deal to have that iconic film set here,” Bass said.

Allegood also noted the opening of 40 athletic facilities of LakePoint Sports, the $1.5 billion sports and entertainment facility, is in Emerson, about three miles outside of Cobb in Bartow County. Kennesaw-based Brasfield & Gorrie began construction in August 2013, and phase one of LakePoint, which includes four baseball fields, a multi-purpose field used for soccer, lacrosse or football, a beach volleyball venue and a wakeboarding facility, opened June 5.

Allegood said the summer opening brought in more tourism for Acworth.  “Our hotel stays in Acworth went up 44 percent,” Allegood said.  Despite the success of 2014, there’s more to look forward to, Allegood said. The remaining 60 sports facilities at LakePoint are set to open in the next 18 months, Allegood said, and he expects to see more economic growth in Acworth when that happens.

“I think it will have an exponential impact on the city,” Allegood said.  Bass agreed 2015 would be a better year for Acworth’s tourism industry.  “The outlook for 2015 is very positive, and yes, tourism will continue to grow with all of the unique sports opportunities offered here,” Bass said.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT ACWORTH, GEORGIA

The Cherokee Nation lived in the area until the early 1830’s. The Western and Atlantic Railroad began operation in 1845 in Atlanta, bringing progress northward to Northcutt Station, the first northbound water stop on the new track. Joseph Gregg, a railroad engineer, renamed this stop after his hometown of Acworth, New Hampshire. Acworth prospered as a busy trade center and was incorporated as a city in December, 1860.

The Civil War brought “The Great Locomotive Chase” through Acworth in April 1862 when James Andrew’s Raiders stole the famous engine, “The General,” in nearby Big Shanty. Sherman was headquartered in Acworth for several days. The town was spared the torch until November 1864; many homes and buildings were burned.

In 1950, Lake Allatoona was completed and it, along with Lake Acworth, created recreational opportunities. Today, Acworth is the center of a thriving, vibrant community.
